This Week in RPGs: Hasbro’s Chris Cocks Takes the Wheel at Wizards of the Coast (4-11 September 2026)
The biggest tabletop story this week isn’t a new book or a Kickstarter, it’s a change of leadership. Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks has taken direct control of Wizards of the Coast following president John Hight’s departure, putting one of the industry’s more divisive figures directly in charge of D&D while Hasbro searches for a permanent replacement.
That’s far from the only news, though. We’ve also got a meaty D&D Beyond content drop, a long-awaited Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay edition, Matt Mercer bringing his GM skills to BlizzCon, a crowdfunding campaign worth backing before it closes, and a genuinely useful GM tip pulled straight from this week’s releases (catch up on last week’s roundup if you missed it).
Headline News: Hasbro’s Chris Cocks Takes Direct Control of Wizards of the Coast
John Hight’s exit as WotC president was confirmed in early September, and Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks has now stepped in to oversee D&D and Magic operations directly while a permanent replacement is sought. Existing D&D leadership, including franchise head Dan Ayoub, stays in place beneath him.
Cocks has been a divisive figure among fans, particularly over AI policy and the “Universes Beyond” crossover strategy, so his direct hand on the wheel, even temporarily, matters more than a routine reshuffle would. Nothing concrete has changed yet, but it’s worth watching what direction he steers things in over the coming months.
New This Week
D&D Beyond September Drop – D&D Beyond | Subscription The Duskling, a new Feywild-touched playable species with customisable “Inner Magic,” headlines this drop alongside four new non-combat spells and a “Storied Encounters” feature pairing stat blocks with narrative framing. A customisable take on Phandalin, distinct from prior published material, also launched alongside it. Available: D&D Beyond, via subscription or 30-day trial.
Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 5th Edition – Cubicle 7 | PDF live now The core rulebook PDF is confirmed live on DriveThruRPG, with the physical pre-order period covering Standard, Collector’s, and several bundle editions. It’s positioned as a 40th-anniversary edition and stays backward-compatible with 4th Edition, and if you’re weighing it against your current system, our fantasy RPG systems breakdown is a good place to start. Available: DriveThruRPG, with physical pre-orders through Cubicle 7.
Paizo’s September Slate – Paizo | Various Pathfinder’s The Dead God’s Hand adventure and the Pathfinder Dice Gods dice-drafting board game shipped alongside Starfinder’s Secrets of the Swarm Adventure Path volume, plus new Organized Play scenarios for both lines. Available: Paizo.com and retailers.
Actual Play Corner
Matt Mercer heads to BlizzCon. The Critical Role DM is running “Questwatch Live,” Overwatch’s first-ever official TTRPG session, on BlizzCon’s main stage this Sunday, 13 September, with voice actors including Kerem Erdinc, LilyPichu and Sally Amaki. It’s tied to Overwatch 2’s Season 5 storyline and looks to be using Daggerheart’s d12 system, which makes it a genuinely notable crossover between Mercer’s Critical Role fame and the wider gaming world.
Critical Role’s own schedule kept its usual pace this week, with Campaign 4 Episode 34 airing live on Thursday alongside an MTG Commander Showdown charity bracket benefiting the Critical Role Foundation. Nothing campaign-shaking to report beyond that, but the charity bracket is worth a look if you enjoy Magic as much as D&D.
Crowdfunding Watch
Crows: Fortune or Death from MCDM Productions is the campaign to watch this week, a Draw Steel-powered OSR survival horror game on Backerkit that closes 15 September, with a $199.99 Limited Edition Ref Box tier for anyone who wants the full physical experience. We first flagged this one when it launched, and MCDM’s track record makes it worth backing before the clock runs out.
A few others are worth a quick look if survival horror isn’t your thing: Time Without Tide (Chaosium, original d6 dice-pool horror, closes 24 September), Jadestorm (Onyx Path’s Storypath Ultra wuxia setting, closes 17 September), and Dark Conspiracy (Mongoose Publishing’s Traveller-based modern horror, closing today at the time of writing).
Community Spotlight
Tabletop Scotland ran in Edinburgh from 4-6 September and reportedly broke its own attendance record with more than 5,000 unique visitors, cementing its place as the UK’s largest D&D-affiliated convention weekend. Over in the US, PAX West’s tabletop freeplay hall ran 4-7 September in Seattle with an expanded expo lineup, giving both sides of the Atlantic a strong showing this week.
GM Toolkit: This Week’s Tip
The tip: Never hand your players a stat block cold. Pair every combat or skill encounter with one line of narrative framing and one complication that ties it to the story.
Why it works: D&D Beyond just built this exact idea into a platform feature with “Storied Encounters,” pairing pre-built stat blocks with narrative context at scale. The underlying habit costs nothing and works in any system, because players remember a fight that means something far more than a fight that’s just numbers on a page.
How to use it: Before your next session, jot a single sentence next to each planned encounter explaining why it matters right now, whether that’s a reason the fight is happening, a secondary objective, or an NPC who’s watching and will remember how it goes (our guide to building NPCs that stick pairs well with this habit).
Example: Instead of “six bandits block the road,” try “six bandits block the road, and one of them is wearing the missing courier’s cloak.” Same fight, completely different table energy.
Coming Next Week
Expect our next roundup to cover how Questwatch landed at BlizzCon, plus the closing results on Crows: Fortune or Death and Skullcrusher, both of which wrap up funding in the days ahead. We’ll also be watching for any further detail on WotC’s leadership search.
