This Week in RPGs: Gen Con Drops D&D’s Multiverse Roadmap and Daggerheart’s Hope & Fear (August 7, 2026)
Gen Con 2026 wrapped in Indianapolis on 2 August with the busiest tabletop role-playing game (TTRPG) news week of the summer. Wizards of the Coast laid out a multi-year Dungeons & Dragons roadmap running to 2027, while Darrington Press put Daggerheart’s first major expansion, Hope & Fear, into fans’ hands. Paizo, Free League and several smaller studios weren’t far behind.
This edition also covers Critical Role’s Age of Umbra: Sallowlands, a Kickstarter that blew six times past its goal, the fallout from Paizo’s split with fan site Archives of Nethys, and a Game Master (GM) tip lifted straight from Paizo’s new horror game. We close with one system-neutral trick for your table this week.
📰 Headline News
Wizards of the Coast maps out D&D through 2027
At its Gen Con panel, Wizards of the Coast confirmed Dungeons & Dragons: Universes Beyond will bring official World of Warcraft content into D&D, with a Star Wars crossover following in late 2027 as part of a “Season of Rebellion.” Two classic settings return the same year: Dark Sun anchors a “Season of Survival,” and Greyhawk: Crown of the Witch Queen anchors a “Season of Sword and Sorcery.” A new D&D Icons programme will revive Dragonlance, Drizzt and unfinished Gary Gygax material, the Psion becomes an official class, and Wizards announced long-term third-party publishing partnerships covering Forgotten Realms, Eberron and Ravenloft.
Why it matters: Wizards is now treating D&D as a platform for licensed crossovers and community-built content rather than a single product line. No on-sale dates or prices have been confirmed yet, so treat exact timing as provisional.
Daggerheart’s first expansion, Hope & Fear, arrives
Darrington Press’s Hope & Fear adds four classes, eight subclasses, a transformation mechanic (vampires, demigods, werewolves and more), 130-plus new adversaries and 28 new environments to Daggerheart. It’s on sale now in limited quantities through Critical Role shops and the Darrington Press Guild, with wide retail following on 25 August. The Deluxe Edition pre-order is $119.99; standard hardcover pricing at general retail hasn’t been confirmed yet.
Why it matters: this is Daggerheart’s first major post-launch content, and Darrington Press confirmed two tentpole rulebooks a year through 2030, including an anthology from former D&D lead designer Chris Perkins. Still deciding between systems? Our Daggerheart vs D&D 5e comparison is worth a read first.

🎥 Actual Play Corner
Critical Role’s Age of Umbra: Sallowlands, a six-episode Daggerheart miniseries GM’d by Matthew Mercer, airs weekly Thursdays at 7pm PST through 13 August. The standalone cast includes Laura Bailey, Jennifer English, Abubakar Salim, Vico Ortiz and Zachery Renauldo. Beacon subscribers get a behind-the-scenes companion series, Cooldowns, released the Monday after each episode.
Dimension 20’s World of Darkness season, City Council of Darkness, continues with Brennan Lee Mulligan behind the screen. Wizards of the Coast’s own actual play, Dungeon Masters, hosted by Jasmine Bhullar with Baldur’s Gate 3 alumni Neil Newbon and Devora Wilde, keeps running weekly Wednesday episodes of Campaign 1. Legends of Avantris’ crew have confirmed an urban noir campaign is coming, though no premiere date is set yet (unconfirmed, flagged so you don’t hold your breath).

🌟 Community Spotlight
The 2026 ENnie Awards were handed out at Gen Con on 31 July. Daggerheart led the pack for Darrington Press with five medals including Best Game and Best Rules, Avantris Entertainment’s Crooked Moon took six awards including Fan Favourite Publisher and Product of the Year, Son of Oak Game Studio’s Legend in the Mist won six medals of its own, and Exalted Funeral’s Dolmenwood picked up gold for its folkloric setting plus three more.
Not all the Paizo news was celebratory: the company confirmed it has ended its eight-year licensing partnership with fan-run rules site Archives of Nethys, citing legal and administrative costs. The site isn’t disappearing, but expect less official artwork and slower updates, and the announcement has stirred real concern across Pathfinder communities on Reddit and Discord.
On a lighter note, Paizo and the Seattle Mariners have confirmed Pathfinder: Operation Salmon Run Day for 9 August at T-Mobile Park, where ticket holders get a Mariners-themed dice set and a Pathfinder adventure module. Credit to Paizo and the Mariners for a genuinely fun crossover.
🛠️ GM Toolkit: Tip of the Week
The tip: steal Paizo’s “Omen Dice” idea for your own escalating-danger track, whatever system you’re running.
Why it works: 13 Omens builds tension by adding more dangerous dice to a shared pool as a scene goes on, so the risk of something going wrong compounds the longer the party lingers. That’s a mechanic any GM can bolt onto any system, because it lives outside the rules rather than replacing them.
How to use it: pick a moment with a natural countdown (an infiltration, a ritual, a collapsing dungeon) and keep a visible pool of d6s next to the table. Add a die whenever the party makes noise, fails a relevant check, or simply takes another round. At the top of each turn, roll the pool: any 1s trigger a complication you’ve pre-written.
Example: running a heist in D&D 5e, Daggerheart or Pathfinder 2e, tell your players a guard patrol is due. Start with zero dice. A failed Stealth check adds one, forcing a lock adds another. Once you’re rolling four or five d6s a round, a 1 means the patrol turns the corner early. The system underneath doesn’t matter; it’s the same trick either way.

📅 Coming Next Week
Confirmed dates ahead: Age of Umbra: Sallowlands wraps on 13 August, the same day Seven-Part Pact and Terra Mortis close their Kickstarters. Children of Time’s campaign closes two days earlier, on 11 August, and Daggerheart: Hope & Fear reaches wide retail on 25 August.
💬 Your Turn
This week’s GM tip works because it borrows a mechanic from outside your system rather than fighting it. Have you ever bolted a homemade mechanic, like an escalating danger pool, onto a system that didn’t come with one? Tell us how it played out in the comments, or tag us on social media.
