Headline News
Free RPG Day Is Tomorrow (Saturday, June 27)
Free RPG Day 2026 is confirmed for Saturday, June 27 at participating local game stores worldwide. This year’s lineup is genuinely strong. Among the freebies: Daggerheart: The Dying Spire, a Dolmenwood quickstart, Vaesen and Pirate Borg quickstarts, a Zombicide: Plaguebearer RPG intro, Obojima material, and a Level 1 indie anthology, with limits typically set at one to three items per person.
For GMs especially, this is worth showing up for. Quickstarts are one of the most underused prep tools available. You can grab one, run the included adventure as-written in a single session, and then immediately ask your players which mechanics felt most engaging. Whatever lands, port it into your home campaign as a house rule or encounter template. You get live playtesting feedback and a fresh session without any of the work. It’s the kind of design research most GMs don’t realise they’re doing.
Check your local game store’s website or social channels to confirm they’re participating before you make the trip.
Free League Launches Invincible Pre-Orders for July 30 Gen Con Release
Free League Publishing opened pre-orders this week for Invincible: Superhero Roleplaying, the official TTRPG based on the comic and animated series. The line includes a core rulebook, Starter Set, GM screen, dice set, and power cards, with pre-orders on Free League’s webshop granting immediate PDF access.
This is one of 2026’s most anticipated RPG releases, and Free League’s track record with licensed properties (Alien, The One Ring, Blade Runner) gives it real credibility as a prestige launch. The Gen Con release date of July 30 puts it squarely in the summer spotlight. If you have players who came to TTRPGs through superhero media, this could be a strong gateway game. Hardbacks typically run around £40/€45 from Free League, with PDFs discounted through pre-order bundles.
New This Week
Tabletop Releases
D&D 5.5e Unearthed Arcana | Wizards of the Coast | Free New playtest material revising the Circle of the Titan Druid, Hellknight, and Demonic Sorcerer subclasses. The Titan forms received higher AC and hit points following earlier feedback; the Hellknight was reworked away from heavy luck mechanics; and the Demonic Sorcerer’s spell list and Abyssal Rupture feature were both adjusted. The Primordial Warlock patron is being shelved entirely after weak playtest results. Worth reading if your group uses any of these options.
D&D Reference Card Decks Announced | Wizards of the Coast | ~$20-25 Eight boxed sets of reference cards covering spells, magic items, and monsters for D&D 5.5e are scheduled for an August 18 release. Spell decks will retail around $20 and the remaining sets around $25 each. The pitch is table efficiency rather than novelty, cutting down on mid-session book-flipping. Practical, if not groundbreaking.
Digital Releases
NONEWORLD | Windows | June 22 A narrative-focused digital RPG release this week from the RPGFan weekly list, worth flagging for GMs looking for story tone and atmosphere to adapt.
The Necromancer’s Tale | PS5, Switch 2, Xbox Series | June 24 Another story-heavy release with strong aesthetic potential as a tabletop inspiration source, particularly for horror-adjacent campaigns.
Actual Play Corner
Critical Role had no major product announcements or campaign news this week. Ongoing anticipation continues around The Legend of Vox Machina Season 4, which has been circling as a topic in fan communities. UK fans looking ahead: Critical Role has confirmed a guest appearance at MCM Comic Con London in October 2026, with photo ops and autograph sessions scheduled.
On the indie side, Firebreathing Kittens podcast is actively seeking new cast members, with an open call running for players available on Pacific time. If you’ve been curious about joining an actual play production, it’s worth looking into.
Crowdfunding Watch
Neon Odyssey (Avantris Entertainment) — Final Numbers Still Dominating Discussion
Neon Odyssey officially closed its Kickstarter campaign earlier in June as the most-funded TTRPG Kickstarter ever, landing at over $15.2 million from more than 46,000 backers. The campaign is done, but the numbers are still setting the conversation about what premium TTRPG crowdfunding looks like in 2026. If you backed it, stretch goal updates are still rolling in. If you didn’t, it’s worth keeping an eye on when fulfilment begins and how the final product lands.
The broader crowdfunding slate this week is quieter on the TTRPG side, with most active campaigns running board-game-adjacent projects.
Community Spotlight
AI in TTRPGs: The Conversation Keeps Moving
A short explainer circulating on social media this week broke down how deterministic “AI TTRPG” engines work and where they might support tabletop play. The community response was predictably mixed, with most of the more thoughtful takes landing somewhere between “useful prep tool” and “not a replacement for the human at the table.” If you’re curious where this conversation is heading, it’s worth searching for this week’s posts on the topic.
Vampire: The Masquerade Arrives on D&D Beyond
D&D Beyond announced partnered content bringing Vampire: The Masquerade: Bound by Blood 5.5e to the platform, including a Kindred class built for the revised 5e ruleset. The crossover is designed to let D&D groups run Vampire-flavoured campaigns inside familiar tooling, which is a genuinely clever way to bridge player bases. Whether it satisfies longtime VtM fans is a separate question, but as a gateway into World of Darkness-style play for d20 tables, it has potential.
GM Toolkit: Use Quickstarts as One-Session Labs
With Free RPG Day landing tomorrow, here’s a practical framework for getting more out of the freebies you pick up.
The Tip: Treat every quickstart as a mechanic lab, not just a session filler.
Why It Works: Quickstarts are built to showcase what makes a system distinctive. Running one as-written gives you a live test of those mechanics with real players at your table, not just your read of them on paper. The reactions you get in play are far more useful than your own impressions.
How to Use It: After the session, ask your group two questions: which moment felt most exciting or surprising, and which mechanic made them think differently? Whatever they name, find the tabletop equivalent in your current system or build a lightweight version as a house rule. If Dolmenwood’s quirky magic made everyone lean forward, steal the tone for your next encounter. If Vaesen’s mystery structure changed how the group approached investigation, borrow the framework.
Example: You run the Daggerheart: The Dying Spire quickstart with your regular D&D group. One player comments that the Fear and Hope mechanic made every roll feel like it had stakes beyond pass/fail. You introduce a session-long tension track to your D&D game where certain failures build toward a table-wide complication. It costs you fifteen minutes of prep and changes how the next three sessions feel.
Bonus: Rotate one quickstart per month to keep your table exposed to new ideas without committing to a full system switch. Over a year, that’s twelve design influences feeding into your home game.
Coming Next Week
Gen Con is on the horizon, with Invincible: Superhero Roleplaying scheduled to release July 30. Expect publisher announcements to start building in the weeks before. The post-Free RPG Day community discussion will also surface some early impressions of this year’s lineup, which will be worth tracking.
On the site, more content is in the pipeline. Check back throughout the week for new posts across the Daggerheart and Call of Cthulhu clusters.
Community Question
Free RPG Day gives you free quickstarts for games you might never have picked up otherwise. Which system on this year’s list are you most curious to try, and is there one you’d actually consider running a full campaign of if the session goes well? Share your answer in the comments.
